Minute (official statement) of DGFM regarding ongoing violent apartheid in the Middle East 11/17/2024
The Downers Grove Friends Meeting is grounded in the Quaker testimonies of peace, equality and nonviolence, believing that there is that of God in every person. We are strengthened by the long history of Quaker presence for peace at times of war. There has been a Quaker presence in both Palestine and Israel for decades, working for peace and the safety of all people, even during these days when hundreds of humanitarian workers have been killed. As we read reports of the deaths of thousands of noncombatants and the large percentage of children killed and others maimed or orphaned we have the gravest concern that all work earnestly to bring about a ceasefire, and work towards a lasting solution. As we have studied the situation in Palestine we have determined that the Israeli occupation of Palestine is an example of apartheid. The occupation has led to untold suffering on the part of the Palestinian people. We affirm that we stand with Palestinian and Israeli people who have suffered physically, personally, and morally from this occupation. DGFM has joined the international community called Apartheid-Free Communities composed of faith-based and other organizations who pledge to work to end apartheid and to bring justice and safety to both Israel and Palestine.
